Prominent Tarboro, Edgecombe Co, NC resident.

Born in Georgia, son of Thomas Jefferson Farrar & Martha S. Royster, Owen Cicero Farrar came back to his family roots in North Carolina and began his career as a tobacco peddler with a large trade from Person to Hyde counties, N. C. Farrar moved to Tarboro, N.C., in the 1870s and established a general store which burned in 1885. His Tarboro partnerships as a general store merchant were variously named Farrar & Pippen (1873-1884), Farrar & Wright (1885-1886), and Farrar, Gaskill & Co. (1885-1891). This last partnership included Farrar, G. B. Wright, J. A. Weddell, E. T. Bynum, and James R. Gaskill. After Farrar's death, Farrar, Gaskill & Co. was liquidated.

Besides running general stores, Farrar also grew cotton and engaged in its sale and manufacture. From the mid-1870s, he held a joint cotton account with commission merchants March, Price and Co. of New York, and from the late 1870s with Hymans and Dancy of Norfolk, Va. In 1881, Farrar entered into partnership with George F. Jones as New York commission merchants under the name of Farrar and Jones, a company which held a seat on the New York Cotton Exchange. He also entered into partnership in 1882 with M. L. Eure and Theo. H. Price in Norfolk as general commission merchants. In 1884, Price withdrew and the company became Eure, Farrar and Co. After Farrar's death, the Norfolk company became Eure, Gregory and Co. until M. L. Eure left and joined the former New York firm of Farrar and Jones which then became Jones, Eure and Co. In addition, Farrar was the principal subscriber and president of the six-thousand-spindle Tarboro Cotton Factory, which was constructed in 1888; and in 1887 he built the Hotel Farrar, a three-story, fifty-five-room hotel containing an office and six stores, in Tarboro.

He married Ellen H. Walker of Edgecombe County about 1868 and by her had 2 daughters, Mollie and Anne. Ellen Walker Farrar died five years later in 1873, at age 26, after the birth of their daughter, Annie.

About 1876, the 41-year old widower took as his second wife, 21-year old Isabelle Rebecca "Belle" Hamilton. This union produced six children: Sallie Hamilton (1877, died in infancy); Elizabeth G. (1880); O. C. Farrar, II (1881, died in infancy); Thomas J. Farrar (1882); Edward Hamilton Farrar (1884); and Owen C. Farrar, Jr. (1888, died in infancy).

O. C. Farrar died in 1891 at age 56. His widow, Rebecca "Belle" Farrar survived him almost 40 years, remaining in Tarboro in her expansive home on Trade Street, where she very often had lodgers from other prominent Tarboro families stay in her palatial home.

O. C. Farrar is is buried in Greenwood Cemetery with both his wives buried to either side of him and his children around him.

Inscription

And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, "Write, 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!'" "Yes," says the Spirit, "so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them."
