Cecil Rhodes Bates, a long time rancher of Gandy, Utah passed away Oct. 13, 2007 at age 92. Cecil said he wanted to live to be 100 years old so they would say his name on the Early Show. He would probably have made it but Leukemia and dealing with skin cancers shortened his life. Born in Uvada (Pleasant Valley) Nevada on Dec. 31, 1914, the tenth child of Horace Lyman and Josephine Caroline Nelson Bates. Lived in North Snake Valley most of his life. Lived in Ibapah for a few years when he was young and left the valley for a few months to receive radiation treatments. Married Noma Elizabeth Sims, May 13, 1939 in Ely, NV. Marriage later solemnized in Salt Lake Temple. Cecil's loves were his family, ranching, mining, cutting posts and wood and gardening. Other great love was membership in LDS Church. His family members, many friends and community members loved him. He will be missed. He loved to sing and will be remembered for his voice as he out sang all of us at church.
Survived by sons: Lanny (Peggy), Wells, NV; Jerald (Marlene), Gandy, UT; Dale, Rainier, OR; and Darrell (Sunny), Fallon, NV; daughters: June (Doug) Castagno, Grantsville, UT; Judy (Ed Mounteer) Moore, Fallon, NV; Amy Sabey, Callao, UT; Rhonda (Tony) Hannebaum, Gandy, UT; and Dixie Brunson, Fallon, NV; 43 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by wife, Noma; all his siblings, brothers: Harlo, Orvel and Elmer; sisters: Ila, Pearlean, Myrtle, Doll, Mereta, Buelah, Della, Joan, and Florence; son: Ronald; grandson: Travis Castagno; great grandson: Ryan Hansen; two sons-in-law: Kerry Brunson, and Bob Sabey.
