Under his military service, in 1868 he was one of Col Forsyth's Scouts in the Battle of Beecher Island, Colorado Territory.
In 1879, Currie allegedly shot actors Ben Porter (in the stomach) and Maurice Barrymore (in the arm) in Texas. Porter died within the hour. After a murder trial in 1880, Currie was quickly acquitted. It is speculated that his brother, the Shreveport (Louisiana) mayor, heavily influenced the trial's outcome.
