Fred was the 2nd child of James T Hanners and his 2nd wife, Eddie Mae Shepherd who married on 30 May 1908 in Talladega Co AL. His father was divorced from his 1st wife. Eddie Mae died between the birth of her youngest child in 1917 and before the 1920 census. Her burial location is currently unknown.

Fred's siblings were Alva, Marvin Joseph, Olean and Henry Bert Hanners.
