Cochran – Jean Stewart Thigpen, age 92, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, in At Home Senior Living in Cochran. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 8, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial will be private in Pulaski-Bleckley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Thigpen, born in Mt. Vernon, had lived in Cochran since 1968. She was the daughter of the late Willie Lee and Eddle Couey Stewart and the wife of the late Wilmer L. Thigpen. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith Bennett, Essie Hughes and Sadie Fountain, her brother, Walker "Bud" Stewart and her son-in-law, O.R. Yearty, Jr. Mrs. Jean received her undergraduate degree in 1956 and graduate degree from Mercer University in Macon and a specialist in education degree in 1966 from Georgia College in Milledgeville. She retired in 1982 after 31 years of teaching at Bleckley County Primary School and was a volunteer teacher at Bleckley County Primary School for 13 years and was affectionately known as "Granny Pen". Mrs. Jean was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors are her children, Wilmer L. "Sonny" (Anita) Thigpen of Slidell, LA, Dianne Thigpen of Cochran and Stewart (Karen) Thigpen of Statesboro; grandchildren, Dee Yearty, Dana (Jeffery) Salaz, Dusty (Tammy) Yearty all of Cochran, Jackson Thigpen and Harrison Thigpen of Statesboro; great grandchildren, Dawson Jarrell, D.J. and Bo Yearty, Bristol and Brantley Salaz all of Cochran; her sister, Alice Currie of Statesboro; her sister-in-law, Ruth Stewart of Mt. Vernon; several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Georgia Baptist Children's Home, 9420 Blackshear Highway, Baxley, GA 31513 or Bethany Baptist Church, 608 GA Highway 26 East, Cochran, GA 31014 or the church of the donor's choice.

The family is at 305 Antioch Road, Cochran and will greet friends after the service Thursday at Bethany Baptist Church.
