After graduating from Erie Community High School in 1953, he attended Wester Illinois University in Macomb, IL. He volunteered for Selective Service duty and entered the U.S. Navy in March 1956. In October 1957, he entered Flight Training at Pensacola, FL in the Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) program. He completed the program and earned his Naval Aviation "Wings of Gold" in May 1959 and was commissioned into the U.S. Navy.

Following his first tour with Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 39 (VS-39) at Quonset Point, RI, he served in a variety of assignments including Flight Instructor, US Naval Mission to Ecuador, Fleet Tactical Support Squadron 40, US Military Assistance Command in Saigon, Vietnam, and Carrier Early Warning Training Squadron 120.

He was subsequently assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 122, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Wing 12, and Commanding Officer of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 121 (VAW-121).

CAPT Ellison's post-command tours were as Navigator, USS FRANKLIN D. His personal awards included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation and various Unit, Service and Campaign medals.

After his Navy career, he enjoyed flying for American Eagle as well as playing tennis, racquetball, golf and softball. He also umpired Girls Fast Pitch Softball for several years.
