Her father and mother were early settlers in Clay County. Her uncle and father built two cabins on their claims on the Little Sioux River. They endured friendships and conflicts with the Sioux, in February of 1857 escaping on foot in deep snow with their children to Sioux Rapids, the nearest community. It is believed the Inkpaduta band burned one cabin in route to the Spirit Lake Massacre. She was born a year later in 1858 and lived her entire life in Boone Co. Iowa.
