5542 Acting Corporal A Bridger, 2nd Battalion (Prince Consort's Own) Rifle Brigade. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Crete on the Jelunga on 2 Oct 1899, and reached Durban on the 26 Oct 1899 and were sent to Ladysmith where they joined the garrison throughout the siege. The battalion held King's Post and Leicester Post on the north of the town. On the night of 10/11 Dec 1899, they were part of a force that ventured out of Ladysmith and successfully destroyed a Boer howitzer on Surprise Hill (12 killed, 36 wounded, and 10 taken prisoner). On 6 Jan 1900, during the great attack, they were deployed to Caesar's Camp on the south of the town to reinforce the defences (about 22 killed and 37 wounded). The battalion were then redeployed to Waggon Hill. Acting Corporal Bridger died of enteric fever (typhoid) at Intombi Hospital, Ladysmith. He was buried in the Intombi cemetery.
