JoAnn Wood
June 30, 1943 - April 3, 2020
Hurst, Texas - JoAnn Wood passed away at the beginning of the COVID pandemic on April 3, 2020. She lived a wonderful life of interaction with friends and family. She was born in Cincinnati and lived in California, Connecticut, and Texas. Her life was animated by three great passions:love of animals, travel, and science-fiction and fantasy. Throughout her life she took care of a string of beloved cats and dogs including her most recent orange tabby, Jax. Her career was spent working for American Airlines and as such she was able to see myriad countries, continents, and states. This included her dream of always seeing ancient Greece and the ruins at Delphi, walking amidst the Incan site of Macchu Picchu, seeing the wonders of America's cities, National Parks, and varied landscapes from Hawaii to the New England coast, traveling the Outback in Australia, visiting the majority of European countries, and her final trip to Tahiti before disabilities left her no longer able to explore the world's wonders. From when she was a little girl, she read science-fiction and fantasy passionately with great love of both magazines like Astounding and landmark books such as I, Robot and Stranger in a Strange Land; she was especially enthusiastic about pathfinding female authors such as Ursula K. LeGuin and Marion Zimmer Bradley. She met her late husband Edward at a science-fiction convention in Ohio. They were married in 1966 and spent decades traveling to both regional and the World Science Fiction Convention; Boskone and Midwestcon were two of their favorites. The Apollo landings and space exploration were like a dream come true. They read science-fiction voraciously making many friends along the way including Robert Heinlein, Wilson "Bob" Tucker, Forrest J. Ackerman, Mike Resnick, and many more. They continued attending conventions with their son Lawrence until Ed passed away in 1996. JoAnn is survived by her son, Lawrence Wood, her step-sister Judith Merkle, and her grandchildren, Alexandra Wood and Sophie Wood. A small private service to scatter JoAnn and Ed's ashes is planned for Hawaii once COVID abates. In Memoriam please donate to your local animal shelter or cause.
