Richard Dick Charles McCoy, son of Charley and Edith McCoy passed away peacefully on Friday, June 18, 2021. He was born September 7, 1939 in Lynwood, California. Dick spent his childhood in Southern California, and during his teenage years he worked as a cowboy on the family Smith-Record Ranch in the Glenville area. After attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he joined the Army, served 6 months active duty, joined the reserves, and began working at Standard Oil, and later as a contract welder until his retirement in 2004.

Dick was drawn to the ranching life and chose to raise his young family in Valley Acres, using his learned skills to raise some small farm animals, a few cows and an occasional horse. He was known to share milk, butter, and eggs with neighbors, and was sought out for his skills as a farrier. In 1992 Dick moved to the Laurelglen area of Bakersfield with his wife, Eileen.

Dick was an adventurer of both land and sea. He loved the challenge of building boats, which led to a few sailing trips with his trusty first mate Eileen. In addition, he served as Commodore of the Bakersfield Model Yacht Club, sailing Solings, Victorias, and Footies. When time allowed he and Eileen loved to travel. They explored many countries in Europe, and visited family in all parts of the United States.

An artist at heart, he had a keen eye that turned pieces of wood and metal into beautiful bowls, knives, and furniture. He was the founding member of the Kern Wood Turners. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, he was a proud member of the Golden Empire Barbershop chorus for a number of years, singing baritone and lead in Good Fourtune Quartet.

Always a lover of good conversation, Dick chose hobbies that allowed him to engage with others. He was a ham radio enthusiast, and obtained an Amateur Extra Class License while using his Dads call sign K6SAM. The Kern County Fair provided another opportunity to meet new people, so for 27 years Dick worked entertainment security. During his quiet times, he enjoyed gardening, particularly growing roses, hot peppers, and succulents.

Dick was a man of strong faith and a devoted member of the Rock Harbor Church in Bakersfield. He served as an usher, and member of the Advisory Board. He was always willing to help anyone with any project. Dick had a special knack for making people laugh, and never knew a stranger. He will be missed, but remembered by all as a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Dick is survived by his wife of 29 years, Eileen; son Rob McCoy (Lori); daughter Dinah Bartolotta (Charles); daughter Harmony Lautzenheiser; stepson Michael Douthitt; grandchildren Emerald Bartolotta West (Ruger), Molly and Ryan McCoy, and Tyler Richard Lautzenheiser; his brother Jerry McCoy (Judy); brother Jeff McCoy (Gae); and sister Kathy McCoy Baker. He also leaves behind family and friends whose life he touched.

Special thanks to the caring staff at CBCC, Mercy Hospitals, and Encompass Health.

A memorial service led by Pastor Brandon Holthaus will be held at Rock Harbor Church located in the 24 Hour Fitness Building (3633 Rosedale Hwy), on July 3rd at 10:30am.
