Sister Mary Serena Sweeney, BVM, 88, of Marian Hall, 1050 Carmel Drive, died at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Marian Hall.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Marian Hall Chapel, with burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Miller Funeral Home, 1185 Route 35 North, East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Mary Serena was an elementary school teacher in Epworth, Peosta; Chicago; Butte, Mont.; Kansas City, Mo., and Wichita, Kan.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1910, in Dubuque, daughter of Matthias and Clara (Noesges) Sweeney.

She made her first profession of religious vows on March 19, 1934, and her final profession on Aug. 15, 1939.

Surviving are her sisters, Mary Virginia Sweeney, BVM, of Dubuque, and Eileen Burds, of Epworth; her brothers, Rev. Monsignor Donald Sweeney, of Dubuque, Herbert Sweeney, of Verona, Wis., and John Sweeney, of Huntsville, Ala.; and her Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 67 years.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM, Retirement Fund.
