Samish Island - Reidar Ytgard, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of June 19, 2021 at 92 years old. He was born in Everett, Washington to Christine and Lars Ytgard on February 16, 1929, the youngest of three children. Growing up in the Sterling community near Sedro Woolley, he developed a love of music at an early age and taught himself to play the harmonica. He entertained his family and friends for many years playing his favorite childhood tunes and hymns.

After graduating from Sedro Woolley High School in 1946, he served in the Army during the Korean War and worked for the Burlington School District for several years. He married the love of his life on December 20, 1971 and retired after working for Skagit Valley College for 29 years.

He lived a long, happy life and is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Mildred Ytgard, and children Wendy (Keith) Morrison, Deanne (Jim) Ballock, Krista West, Diane Lawrenson (Joe Bee) and Terry (Joanne) Holden. He was a beloved grandfather to 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren as well as an uncle to two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Borgny Heyntsen, brother Erling Ytgard, daughter Arlene Goldsmith and grandson Brian Morrison.

Reidar enjoyed playing basketball, throwing horseshoes, camping, woodworking and spending time with many life-long friends. He regularly sang and played his harmonica at Burlington Lutheran Church and sang the Star-Spangled Banner and cheered on his team at many Skagit Valley College basketball games.

He spent his retirement years on Samish Island where he enjoyed clam digging with his family and friends, gardening, bird watching and rescuing stray kitties. He was a kind and loving man who always had time to bend everyone's ear with a lively conversation and a joke. He brought great joy to all who knew him.

Reidar's graveside service is Monday, June 28 at 1 p.m. at the Burlington Green Hills Memorial Cemetery. A memorial will be held at a later date at the Burlington Lutheran Church.
