Willie R Holmes Sr.
October 9, 1937 - April 1, 2020

Willie R. Holmes, Sr., was born October 9, 1937, to Charlie and Sallie Holmes in Thomaston, Georgia. He was the ninth of fourteen children.
On October 26, 1957, he married Kattie McCary in Thomaston, Georgia, and to this union four children were born. In 1959, he moved his family to North Chicago, Illinois, where he lived for six years before buying his home in Waukegan, Illinois, where he resided for 55 years.
Willie attended Christian Valley Missionary Baptist Church in North Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of Local 152 Laborers Union which he worked construction for 30 years with several companies as Bolander and Peter Baker & Sons. Willie retired in 1995, but continued to attend monthly meetings for updates and to socialize with his former co-workers and members.
Willie loved to travel to visit family across the United States. His love for fishing with friends and family was priceless, as well as his yearly vacations with his children and grandchildren. He had a love for his neighbors and friends on the 1700 block of Lyons Court in Waukegan, Illinois; they were one family. He enjoyed and looked forward to attending the yearly festival as 29th of May Memorial Day weekend in Thomaston, Georgia, July 4th in Zion, Illinois with his son and daughter-in-law, family and friends for barbecue and fireworks, and Black Sunday in August when him and his friends would attend to watch the races and enjoy the music and food.
Willie is preceded in death by his wife, Katie Holmes; daughter, Melissa Holmes; daughter-in-law, Jackie Holmes; parents, Charlie and Sallie Holmes; seven brothers, Leroy, Charlie Jr., Shelton, Johnnie, Roosevelt, Adel, and W.C. Holmes; five sisters, Mary Wimley, Sheryl Holmes, Nellie Brown, Sallie Holmes, and Minnie Holmes; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
