Riley Alexander Knowles was the son of Washington Knowles 1798-abt 1868 of ,,Duplin, North Carolina and Nancy McDonald 1801-1870 of Scotland. He enlisted into the Confederate States Army as a private on 01 Oct 1862 into Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment,of Florida and transfered to Co. C , 4th Calvary Regiment of Georgia on 01 Sep 1863. He married Olive Elizabeth Sandlin 1851-1931 on 10 Feb 1876 in Columbia County, Florida. They had at least 5 children (4 girls and 1 boy). In 1870 he lived in Benton, Columbia, Florida with his mother, Nancy Knowles age 69. In 1880 He lived in Belmont, Hamilton, Florida with his wife, Olive Sandlin Knowles age 28, and his twin daughters, Mary P. and Mollie E. Knowles both age 4. In 1900 he and Olive live in Jasper, Hamilton, Florida.
