Kathleen Ray Barnes, daughter of Adley Robert and Edith May Fulford, was born July 4, 1928, at Oakland, Missouri. She passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2007, at St. Mary's Manor, in Blue Springs, Missouri, at the age of seventy-nine years, four months, and six days.
On January 18, 1948, she was united in marriage to James Omer Barnes, and to this union two sons were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Omer, on February 22, 1995; and her sister, Maxine Bowman.
Kathleen is survived by her two sons, Bruce Barnes, and his wife, Linda, of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Alan Barnes, of Branson, Missouri; twin grandsons, Brian and Jared Barnes, of Blue Springs, Missouri; her brother, Jack Fulford, of Clinton, Missouri; her nieces and nephews, Ed Bowman, Dan Bowman, Kathy Tober, Jess Fulford, Jennifer Fulford, Charlie Barnes, and Elaine Stewart; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
She was born and raised in the Oakland community, and for much of her childhood her father and uncles owned and operated the Oakland Store. She attended Dalton School and Lebanon High School, graduating in 1946, and went on to college at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield. After she and Omer were married, she began the first of her forty-seven years as a dairy farmer's wife. While their children were still small, the couple moved to the farm on Wood Street at the edge of Lebanon, where they lived for nearly 40 years.
To those who knew Kathleen, it was obvious that her faith was the most important part of her life. At the age of eleven, she was saved and joined Antioch Baptist Church, where she remained a member for thirty years. For the last thirty-seven years, Kathleen was a dedicated member of Second Baptist Church of Lebanon, participating in many of its ministries and activities right up until the onset of her recent illness. She also served on the board of directors of the local Crosslines Ministries for many years, and volunteered as an election worker over the course of several decades.
Kathleen loved growing things, especially flowers. She also enjoyed cooking and generously shared the fruits of her labors with friends and family throughout her life. Another of her and Omer's favorite pastimes was fishing, which they especially enjoyed sharing with friends.
Kathleen had many talents, and perhaps her most memorable, and certainly the most lasting, was her sewing. As a young wife and mother, she sewed clothing for her family. She knitted and crocheted also, creating numerous quilts, afghans, and other keepsakes for her children and grandchildren. After moving from the farm in 1994, she began to make lap robes and baby quilts, which she gave to nursing homes, shelters, and various charities. Over a ten-year period, she created and gave away over 700 of these handmade quilts.
Of all Kathleen's accomplishments, she was proudest of her family. She devoted herself to her husband and children and delighted in her grandchildren. Her friends and family will remember her for her faith, her energy, her generosity, her humility, and her hot rolls. She will be deeply missed, but the legacy of love she leaves behind will be with us always.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon. Burial will be in Mount Rose Memorial Park.
