He deployed with his battery to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, arriving in Natal after the battle of Colenso (15 Dec 1899) and joined the Natal Task Force. They fought at Potgeiter's Drift and Spion Kop between 20-24 Jan 1900, at Vaal Krantz 5-7 Feb 1900, and during the battle of Tugela Heights 14-28 Feb 1900, the break in battle to Ladysmith. During the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, Driver Cook fell ill and died of enteric fever in the military hospital, Ladysmith.
