Mons' brother Knut K. Stensland's daughter Anna Karina married my g.grandmother's brother, Anders (Andrew) Peterson Fjerestad. Andrew & family resided on a farm at Estelline, SD, close by Mons' and other relatives.
Mons K. Stensland immigrated to the US in 1875. Vernon Township, Dodge County, Minnesota May 1, 1875 Census shows Mons living with his brother Knut and wife Martha, and their children Anna (3); Simon (2) and Agnes(1). The 1865 Norway census shows Mons, 24, living with parents Knut Knutson and Marta Monsdatter, siblings, Ole, Anders, Johannes, Nils, Marta and Kari. Possible his older brother, Knut had already left the home. The family lived on the Stensland farm, Hosanger place. June 12, 1883, Mons renounced his loyalty to the King of Norway and Sweden and U.S. District Court Judge Kilder, accepted Mons as a naturalized citizen of the US. He was residing in Brookings County at that time.
Mons lived in Deuell County, SD in 1880 with his older brother Knut K. and wife, Martha Stensland. Their brother Ole K. also emigrated and married Betsy Stromma in Dodge Cty, MN in 1888.
Mons got a homestead in T 112, R 49, Brookings County, SD in 1880, and was farming his land. Mons' single sister, Martha K. Stensland helped him with the house until he married. Mons and Anna Lunde, b. 1853, who immigrated from Norway about 1880, married in 1882 in the US.
Mons and Anna had four children, Carl C. John, Maria A. and Arthur living with them in 1900. Ed and Karen, also children, may have been grown. The family was living close to Toronto, Deuel County, SD in 1900.
Mons became a resident at the State Hospital at Yankton, from just after 1900 until his death at age 82, in 1924, confirmed by SD Archivist Ken Stewart. Anna lived until 1932, with her sons Carl and John after Mons left the family home; and is buried at the Leganger Cemetery, Toronto, Deuel Cty, South Dakota. Their sons, Carl and John are also buried at the Leganger Cemetery. Arthur is buried in WI.
