Solomon was the last of 7 children (6 sons and 1 daughter) born of Robert Dodge (b. 1708) and his wife Lydia Dodge. Solomon's siblings were: Ebenezer (1744-1833), Lydia (b. 1746), Robert (b. 1748), Judah (b. 1751), Nehemiah (1753-1825), and Nathaniel (1756-1818).

Before the Revolution, Solomon moved to Peterborough, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. In September, 1777, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Captain Peter Clark's Company, Colonel Daniel Moore's Regiment of Volunteers, which marched from Lyndeborough in the same county and joined the Northern Continental Army at Saratoga on the Hudson River in New York. During this enlistment, Solomon served 28 days from September 30th to October 27th and traveled 134 miles.

In 1780, at the age of 20 years, Solomon was mustered in camp by Major William Scott as a New Levy from Peterborough joining the Hampshire Line to serve in the Continental Army for the term of six months. During this period, Solomon served 5 months and 18 days from June 28th to December 6th and was paid for traveling 98 miles to Worcester. In July, 1780, Solomon was issued a half pint of Rum and one pound Sugar by Joseph Bass Cloathier and Commissary for the State of New Hampshire at West Point.

At Peterborough, Solomon met his wife Mary Taggart (1767-1833) by whom he had 11 children (6 sons and 5 daughters): Solomon (1788-1824), Anna (1789-1872), James (1790-1866), Robert (b. 1792), Hannah (b. 1796), Nathan (1798-1873), Polly (1801-1817), Sarah (Sally) (1802-1864), John (b. 1805), Lydia (1807-1887), and Samuel (1809-1891).

Solomon and his family moved from Peterborough to Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont in March 1789. He with 28 other freemen were present at the organization of that Town, March 29, 1791.
