"A woman by the name of Caroline F. McGee, about sixty years old, was found dead in her house at the lower end of Water St. this forenoon about 11 o'clock. She was sitting on the floor of her sleeping room with her back against the foot of the bed. City Marshal True called Coroner J. Q. A .Hawes who empanelled a jury and an inquest was held commencing in the afternoon At 2 o'clock. On examination no marks of violence were found on or about the body. Her husband. Michael McGee, with whom she lived, testified that on Wednesday afternoon she was in her usual health and about 2 or 3 o'clock they made their meal on raw eggs after which he laid down on the bed and
slept till about 6 o'clock when he awoke and spoke to his wife and told her she had better get into bed, as she was sitting on the floor leaning against the foot of the bed and the wall. She said she would stay where she was. He awoke again about 11 o'clock and took a drink of whiskey but heard nothing from her. This morning he got up about six o'clock and went out and got some more whiskey and brought it home to drink. She was then in the same place and position on the floor. Supposing her to be asleep, he left her and came up street, and went back home about 11 o'clock A. M., getting a man to assist him home. The man that went with him on going in saw her on the floor and spoke to her receiving no reply put his hand on her head and found her cold in death. Other evidence was heard, but so far no new facts have been brought out to show cause of death. The jury convened in the evening and adjourned till 10 o'clock Friday forenoon. The husband is a man about 65 years old and a few months ago had a stroke of paralysis leaving him in a disabled condition. About three months ago he received an arrearage of U. S. pension of about $1400, since which time they have probably been drinking hard. They have three married daughters in Massachusetts. They moved to Hallowell about four weeks ago from Augusta, where they had lived about two weeks moving there from Boston." (Oct. 10, 1884, The Daily Kennebec Journal of Augusta, Maine)

"In the case of Caroline F. McGee, who was found dead in Hallowell Thursday afternoon, the coroner's jury Friday returned a verdict that she came to her death in consequence of physical disability and exhaustion induced by disease, hunger and intoxication, and that Michael McGee was negligent and unmindful of the condition of his wife, in consequence of his gross intoxication." (Oct. 16, 1884, The Republican Journal of Belfast, Maine)
