Joan Linnea (Rye) Mitchell, 82, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at her home in Sioux City, Iowa.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 10, 2021 from 9:30-10:15 at St Luke Lutheran Church in Sioux City (church requires masks). A service officiated by Reverend Del Olivier will be held for family following visitation. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is assisting the family.
Joan was born to Grover and Hilma Rye on November 16, 1938 in Sioux City, IA. Joan attended school in Sioux City graduating from Central High School in 1957. In 1960, Joan married Joseph Mitchell. They were blessed with two children.
Joan taught school for many years starting in Sioux Falls for 2 years and spending 38 years teaching for the Sioux City Schools. Joan loved to travel the world and being involved in church activities. She also loved spending endless hours participating and supporting her grandchildren in their activities.
Joan is survived by her children, Cheryl Connot and her partner John Davis of Sioux City and Todd Mitchell of Topeka, KS; her grandchildren; Mitchell (Courtney) Connot, Linnea (Eric) Welch, Jennifer Baurley, Lauren Connot, Matthew (Eva) Connot, Nicole Mitchell, Josie Mitchell, great grandchildren Haley Connot, Maggie Baurley, Nolan Welch, Aiden Connot and Baby Boy Connot arriving in October.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Mitchell, her parents, eight siblings and three of her nieces and nephews.

Joan Linnea (Rye) Mitchell was the youngest of nine children to Grover Wilford Rye (1892-1958), whose family was of Norwegian descent, & Hilma Linnea Johnson (1891-1985), who was born the year after her parents and elder brother came to America from Sweden originally as family Johannisson. Grover & Helma were married in 1913 and together had:
1. Gladys Hilma (Rye) Cobb (1914-2007)
2. Vivian Annette (Rye) Whitaker Dalton (1916-1985)
3. Phyllis Lorraine (Rye) Steele (1919-1982)
4. Winifred "Winnie" Augusta (Rye) Bennett (1923-2011)
5. Shirley Edna (Rye) Widner (1925-1982)
6. Grover "Bud" Wilford Rye (1928-2007)
7. Edward Logan Rye (1930-2008)
8. Marjorie Elizabeth (Rye) Anderson (1933-2016)
