Edward Bynum attended UNC and was a member of the Philanthropic Society. In 1878, he married Maud Barnes of Pitt County, when he was 20 years old, and she 18.
"Turner" became a sucessful merchant in Tarboro, and in 1885 built an impressive two-story Victorian Italianate home (shown here) located on Main Street.
Turner Bynum died just 4 years after building his home, passing in 1889 at young age 31.
His then 29-year old widow never remarried, and remained in the home raising their 3 children Mary Bynum (1879), Edward Turner Bynum, Jr. (1881), and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bynum (1887) until her death in 1939.
