By 1908, the family had moved a few blocks away, having purchased the much larger "Zander House" on Main Street. (The Hart's purchased the Zander House on Main Street, while at the same time, the Zander's purchased the Hart House in 1908.)
Just about 3 years after the move, his father died when he was 13 years old, and he was raised by his widowed mother in the "Zander House". His mother never remarried, but was financially secure from wealth inherited from both sides of the family, although she did take in boarders in this large family home.
By age 22, Luther was working as a dispatcher for the railroad, and he later joined the Masons. About 1930 he married Ida Parks of Tarboro and they had one known son, Edgar Lee Hart, II.
Edgar Lee Hart, Sr., died in 1982 at age 84. His wife survived him another eight years, passing in 1990 at age 88.
