Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davis Mabrey was born in Edgecombe County in 1864, the daughter of Bythiel Mabrey (CSA) and Mary Louisa Barlow.

She was the paternal grandchild of wealthy planter, Charles F. Mabry and his (1st) wife Frances Staton; and gr-grandchild of Wilkinson Mabry & Rebecca Braddy, all of Edgecombe County. She is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Francis Maybury (ca. 1650-1711) who immigrated from England to Virginia. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of wealthy planter David Barlow II and his wife, Peninnah Shurley/Shirley.

Her father died when she was 3 years old, and her widowed mother raised her in Tarboro. Her mother was the daughter of David Barlow and Penninah Shirley/Shurley, wealthy planters in Edgecombe County.

At age 20, Lizzie married 24-year old William A. Hart, who would become a wealthy mill owner (Hart's Mill) in Tarboro. The couple had 4 children, but only the eldest child, Bythiel Mabrey Hart, survived infancy. At the turn of the 20th century, the couple built an expansion Neo-Classical home on Main Street befitting their stature in the community.

Her husband passed in 1926 after 42 years of marriage, and Lizzie passed two years later in 1928 at age 64.
