Bythiel Mabrey was born 1834 in Edgecombe County, NC, the 3rd of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 girls) born to wealthy planter Charles Mabry and his (1st) wife, Frances Staton. The Family surname has been found in public records spelled as Maybury, Mabrey, and Mabry.

He was the paternal grandson of Wilkinson Mabry & Rebecca Braddy; and gr-grandson of Charles Mabry III and Martha Wilkinson; all of Edgecombe County. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Francis Maybury of England (ca. 1650-1711) who immigrated to Virginia and married Elizabeth Gilliam.

Bythiel was about 2 years old when his mother died, and his father remarried in about 1836 to Penelope Bryan of Edgecombe, by whom 3 more children were born. By the time he had reached maturity, Bythiel was already a
well-to-do planter in Edgecombe County.

When North Carolina seceded from the Union, Bythiel (at age 27) enlisted for 6 months as a Pvt. in Com. A, 1st Reg, NC Infantry in Edgecombe Co NC; present or accounted for until mustered out 12-13 Nov 1861.

Two of Bythiel's siblings would be killed during the war.
Older brother, Dr. Baker W. Mabrey (1830-1862) died in service in 1862, [Memorial #23861695]; and his half-brother, Lt. Charles D. Mabry (1843-1864) died in 1864.

In about 1863, Bythiel married Mary Louisa Barlow, daughter of David Barlow and Penninah Shirley (Shurley) of Edgecombe. The couple had one known child, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davis Mabrey born in 1864, who would later marry mill-owner, William A. Hart of Tarboro.

Bythiel Mabrey died in 1867, at the young age of 33. His widow never remarried, raising their child until her death in 1894 at age 56.
