Ruth Ann Basco, 75, of Show Low, left this world unexpectedly but peacefully in her home March 13, 2009. She was born Feb. 7, 1934, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Earl and Geraldine (Bush) Dortch.

Ruth was a schoolteacher for 32 years and taught with enthusiasm and love. She had a strong passion for teaching.

Many of her students remained in contact, sharing their life with her as she was instrumental in their success in life.

She retired from the Savannah School District in California with the highest honor and praise.

She was married to Steve Basco April 4, 1972, in Buena Park, CA. They lived in California before moving to their retirement home nestled in the woods in Show Low in 2001.

There they found numerous friends, and she was very active in the community. She served as secretary and historian for the Elk's No. 2090 Emblem Club No. 336, belonged to the Red Hat Club Society, played cards every Tuesday with her close friends, Vicky, Diane, Berta, Madelin and Gloria and played bunco monthly.

Ruth is survived by her husband Steve; three daughters, Sany Smeal, Tina Clark and Rene Villalobo; sister Evelyn McNutt; 11 grandchildren, Jessica and Garret Smeal, Amber Strause, Tiffany Ravert, Noah Clark, Scarlett Tuttle, Gabriel Clark, Issac Clark, Jamie Poulsen, Tiara Wright and Robert Pizzuto; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Ruth was an amazing woman. She touched everyone she knew with her kind words and beautiful smile. She was intelligent, strong, funny, generous, genuine and loving. She affected so many lives and she will be sorely missed by all.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23, at the Show Low Elk's Lodge No. 2090.

Arrangements are under the direction of Black's Mortuary of Show Low.

Ruth enjoyed the outdoors, having owned nine boats throughout the years. She enjoyed many activities such as fishing, shooting guns, reading, going to the casinos, playing pogo and spending time with her friends, her dog Sugar and, of course, her husband.
