After suffering about a year with pulmonary weakness, which finally developed into consumption, Miss Mary E. Gavin, age thirty six years and two months, succumbed to the hand of death in Emerson, Neb., March 8th, 1897, at 2:30 o'clock am. Miss Gavin was born in Fayette, Wis., and came west nine years ago, locating at DeSmett, S.D., where she purchased a homestead relinquishment and secured a deed of the same seven years later.
During the past two years Miss Gavin resided in Emerson, where she has many devoted friends who sadly regret her departure form their midst.
Miss Gavin leaves a mother whose home is at DeSmet, S.D., a sister, Jennie Gavin and four brothers. Thomas, who was present during the last days of her sickness and whose unique kindness and sympathy will not soon be forgotten in Emerson. John, of Darlington, Wis., George and Michael, of DeSmett, S.D. to mourn her loss.
Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock the obsequies took place at the Catholic church in Emerson, Rev. Father Barry officiated and celebrated mass. Tuesday afternoon Thomas Gavin taking the 3:30 o'clock train, accompanied his sisters remains to Waldwick, Wis. where they were interred by the side of the beautiful monument which graces the little mound that marks the last resting place of the remains of Mary's father.
