Daughter of Clyde Norman and Florrie Woodberry Thomas, wife of David Archie Shelley, Sr.

MARION - Mrs. Margaret Thomas Shelley, 97, was welcomed into her heavenly home on Wednesday morning, May 19, 2021.

Born on March 12, 1924, Margaret was the oldest child of Clyde Norman Thomas, Sr. and Florrie Woodberry Thomas. She graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1942 from Rains High School.

As a teenager Margaret began helping her daddy run his country store and working in the Rains Post Office as an assistant to the Postmaster. On May 14, 1946, she married David Archie Shelley, Sr. Margaret served as Postmaster of the Rains Post Office for 25 years and was affectionately known to her customers as "Ms. Margaret."

Margaret loved her church and her church family. She began teaching Sunday School as a teenager and was a former teacher of the Ruth Class at Gapway Baptist Church. She was a former choir member, a kitchen helper during Vacation Bible School and an avid supporter of the Live Nativity Program and riding "Bubba" during the annual camel rides.

Margaret was an avid gardener and loved working in her yard, taking pride in having a beautiful day lily garden and blooming plants during all seasons. She also enjoyed NASCAR and was a huge Jeff Gordon fan. She enjoyed Atlanta Braves Baseball and North Carolina Tarheels Basketball. She loved visiting the State Farmers Market, eating ice cream and dining at Ella's in Calabash, North Carolina.

Margaret is survived by a daughter, Sybil Shelley and her grandson, Brian Shelley, whom she loved as her son, of the home.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband David Shelley, Sr., and her son David Shelley, Jr. She was also predeceased by her parents, her sister, Vera Thomas Taylor and her brothers Clyde Norman Thomas, Jr., Preston Thomas, and a baby brother who died at birth.

A celebration of life will be held at Gapway Baptist Church in Mullins, South Carolina on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Bailey and Rev. Chip Scruggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Gapway Baptist Church Cemetery.
