Michael N. Sutton, 92, passed away at the Estelline Care Center on May 17th, 2021. He had suffered declining general health over the past few years and recently had a couple of debilitating falls. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Friday, May 28, 2021 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD. Memorial Visitation will be from 9:00am until the time of the Mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Rude's Funeral Home is assisting the family with the services.

Mike was born January 2nd, 1929, in Lincoln County Minnesota near Ivanhoe, the county seat; during that time his parents, Michael F. (M.F.) and Elizabeth V. (Cavanaugh) Sutton, were engaged in farming on Buffalo Ridge along the South Dakota / Minnesota boarder. The family subsequently moved to a farm five-miles south of Brookings, SD; Mike graduated high school in Brookings and enlisted in the Air Force where assignments included a tour in Germany given the onset of the Cold War in the late 1940s. Upon separation from the AF, he attended South Dakota State College in 1955-56.

Mike apprenticed as an electrician for a few years under his brother-in-law, Ralph Parsley, in Brookings County. By the late-1950s, he was a member of the IBEW Local # 292 Electrical Workers in the Twin Cities area where he worked in industrial construction for decades. He remained a proud, life-long member of, and advocate for, IBEW 292.

Additionally, he invested in acreage in the Twin Cities' suburb of Eden Prairie along Purgatory Creek off Pioneer Trail road in the early 1960s. He personally developed this property, selling lots and building a few homes, including the residence where he and his wife, Ione, resided for decades.

When his health declined in 2018, he moved to an assisted living facility in Brookings to be close to family. He was a faithful member of Pax Christi Catholic Community in Eden Prairie for years and of Saint Thomas More Catholic Church during his time in Brookings.

Michael was preceded in death by his spouse of nearly 40-years, Ione (Sanderson), who died in 2002, his parents and a majority of his siblings; brothers: John L., Edward S., and Jerome J.; sisters: Isabel C. Dunn, Mary E. Parsley, Patricia A. Fallon, and Jeanne B. Almen, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by a brother, Philip F. of Kansas City, MO, 32 nieces and nephews, and untold grand & great-grand nieces and nephews.

Uncle Mike's regard for his family is such that in 2012 to honor his mother, he established a scholarship at the South Dakota State University Foundation for students with financial need. Donations in his honor may be made to: EVCS Scholarship Endowment SDSU Foundation 815 Medary Avenue Brookings, SD 57006.
