David established the city of Huffman, Texas in 1839.David Huffman was born in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, the third son of David F. & Susanna (Clark) Huffman. On June 8, 1836, at age 17, he joined the Capt. Collins Infantry Volunteers in the fight for Texas independance. In September of 1836, he was honorably discharged and he received 320 acres of land in eastern Harris County (Bounty Warrant #513) that became Huffman, Texas. The land was awarded as payment for his service to the Republic of Texas. On December 10, 1839, he married Elvira McLaurin in St. Landry Parish, LA., and moved his wife, parents and a few other relatives to his new land. David and Elvira were the parents of 8 daughters and one son. One daughter and the son died quite early in life, and, as the others married, David deeded a portion of his land to each husband. One of the daughters was Minerva Elvira Huffman, who married Phillip Karcher. David Huffman died in Huffman, Texas, June 25, 1884.
