Redlands woman was the daughter and niece of vaudeville performers
Jo Ellen Johnson, who had lived in Redlands since 1955, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Dec. 20. She was 97.

She was born on Sept. 11, 1923, in Muncie, Indiana, to Joe and Opal Trietsch. Her family was quite musical. Her father was briefly on vaudeville with his brothers Paul and Ken, who went on to fame as founding members of the band The Hoosier Hot Shots.

She grew up in Michigan and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Michigan State University in 1945. She married Dwight Johnson in 1947, and moved to Redlands in 1955.

Both were active in the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling the country and the world with church friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2017, and is survived by four sons, Steve, Keith, Doug and Paul; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
