Mary Sue was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and was the daughter of Joseph Wheeler Sewell (Joe) Sewell (1898 - 1990) and Willie Veal Sewell (1900-1984).
Siblings: Joseph Wheeler Sewel Jr. (1923-1987), James Wesley Sewell 1928-2020).
She was a graduate of Tuscaloosa High School and the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority.
It was there Mary Sue met the love of her life and future husband – Dr. Leighton Calhoun Parnell, Jr. (1927-1998) . They were married in 1950 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Throughout her life, she was involved in many organizations including the Junior League of Birmingham, the Old Elyton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Harlequins Dance Club, Silhouettes Dance Club, Vanities, Dogwood Garden Club, Lockerbie Garden Club, National Association of Colonial Dames, Kappa Delta Alumnae and Money Matters Investment Club.
Mary Sue never had idle hands. She always had a project – tracing genealogy, sewing, knitting, smocking a baby dress or a thousand-piece puzzle, she could do it all. But her first priority was always her family. She was the ultimate mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers – Dr. Joseph Wheeler Sewell, Jr. and Dr. James Wesley Sewell and her granddaughter, Carleton Benners Parnell (1980-2002).
She is survived by her children – Leighton Calhoun Parnell, III (Allene), Stuart Alexander Parnell (Patti), Kay Parnell Grisham (Bo) and Phillip Sewell Parnell. Her grandchildren – Allene Parnell Neighbors (Anderson), Patricia Parnell Powe (Garrett), Stuart Alexander Parnell, Jr (Katelyn), James Leighton Parnell, Patrick Moore Parnell (Elizabeth), James Davidson Grisham, Mary Virginia Grisham, Phillip Sewell Parnell, Jr., Bennett Edward Parnell, Claire Elizabeth Parnell and Samuel Spencer Parnell and 5 great-grandchildren.
The family will hold a private graveside service and in lieu of flowers, requests memorial donations be made to the Parnell Memorial Library, 277 Park Drive, Montevallo, Alabama 35115.
