After his father, John Counts Senior of Glade Hollow died in 1803, John Counts of Cleveland VA became JC Senior as he, too, had a son named John.
From the book, Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow, page 76 (by Elihu Jasper Sutherland, published by Hetty Swindall Sutherland):
John Counts was born about 1765 and died Oct 1, 1843, at Cleveland, Russell Co, VA, where he had lived for more than 55 years. For that reason and because there have been so many (editor's note: children of?) John Countses in Russell Co, he is known as "John Counts of Cleveland."
His parents were John and Mary Magdeline Counts, who moved from Shenandoah Co, VA, in 1789, and settled in Glade Hollow, Russell Co, VA. For that reason his father is known as "John Counts of Glade Hollow"...
Continuing from EJS book:
The first known record of JC of Cleveland is found in the personal property tax list for Shenandoah County for 1787, which reports him as over 21 and living in the family of Jacob Rasnake, his bro- in-law (is it indicated that JC was single or married?). he moved to Russell County during the same year and the Russell County, VA tax list shows a JC assessed as of June 21, 1787, the owner of one horse, and living in the Upper District. The one tithable listed in his family indicates that he was married and the head of a family at that date.
NEWS AS OF 10/31/2022:
For over three years, a team of four Counts descendant researchers have been diligently attempting to locate our John Counts of Glade Hollow prior to 1765, and looking for DNA connections. It was decided to examine any and all Counts names of various spellings that were present in or near the same area of our John to distinguish our John Counts from the others.
Our team of researchers are examining internet databases, relevant historical societies, books and library microfiche holdings. They have even consulted a researcher in Germany to assist in the search for records there.
They have located JC Senior of Glade Hollow as "being fined for missing two musters as a soldier of the Foot in Captain William Bethel's service during the French and Indian War - this was in service to the British who conscripted soldiers from Virginia or failure to appear for duty but no actual service records". By researcher, Sharon Lemkuil, 7/22/2021 PLEASE SEE Kayser-Counts.org for further info.
One research member, Brett Compton, located mention of John (of Glade Hollow) on the back of a land document dated 1745. This find puts JC Sr in the Hawksbill Creek area about 20 years earlier than what was previously known.
They have a general sense of the area that was his farm on Hawksbill Creek in what was first Frederick County, VA, then Shenandoah County, VA, and currently Page County.
They continue to be amazed at how difficult JC and his family origins are to locate. Looking for and examining 1700s documentation is tedious work and involves much more than believing what is routinely displayed on Ancestry and other genealogy sites as truth.
They have become well acquainted with names of his neighbors and with names of land deed transactions around him but documents involving our John himself are few and far between; like looking for a needle in a haystack.
As any information is forthcoming, it will be first revealed on the website: Kayser-Counts.org
We will report on some of those findings to you.
