Delaware Governor, U.S. Congressman. From 1977 until 1985, he served as the 68th Governor of Delaware. A member of the Republican Party, he served Delaware's At Large Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 until 1977. Born into the wealthy du Pont family dynasty of Delaware, he was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and Princeton University, prior to receiving his Law degree from Harvard School of Law. Following graduation, he enlisted with the United States Naval Reserve with whom he served as a seabee. After his discharge, he was admitted to the bar and commenced practicing in his native Wilmington, Delaware, in addition to working for his family's company. He began his political career when he was elected to and served in the Delaware House of Representatives from 1969 until 1971. He succeeded William Roth (who went on to serve in the US Senate from Delaware) in the United States House of Representatives. In the General Election of 1976, he defeated Sherman W. Tribbitt for Delaware's governorship and during his tenure in Dover, du Pont worked with Democrats to pass tax cuts and was a proponent in lowering interest rate regulations. He spearheaded efforts to pass the Financial Center Development Act (1981) which led to the creation of more than ten-thousand jobs in the following decades. After leaving office, he had an unsuccessful bid for the Republican Presidential nomination in 1988.
