Michael John Kaufman, age 53 of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 3, 2021 at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill. Mike or affectionately known as Booke, Pappy Nike, Unclely Mikely and by his military family as Bart; was born on June 25, 1967 in Camp Hill, PA the son of W. John Kaufman of Carlisle and the late Dorothy "Queeny" (Graham) Kaufman.

Mike was a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School Class of 1985. He was employed as a maintenance repairman with the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs in Middletown, PA. Mike was a US Air Force veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was a member of the 193 Civil Engineer Squadron from 1989 - 2005. Mike retired from the 201st Regional Training Site as a Master Sergeant in 2015.

Mike was involved in key military trainings and deployments. Some of these locations included Bolivia, Task Force Diamond Back Operation Jump Start, Nogales, AZ where he participated in building of the border wall. While in Arizona, Mike was known as the Supervisor with the pink hard hat and supported the partnering of the 193D Prime Beef and the 201st Red Horse. Mike served in key positions with multiple construction projects at Hulbert Field in Florida supporting hurricane relief and rebuilding, Borinquen, Puerto Rico, Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004, and even as close to home as State College, PA. While on deployment, Mike brought home Joe Paterno, all be it a cardboard cutout, but it was still Joe Pa to the unit.

Mike was always a key member of Summer Camp / Training for the 193D CES and provided supervisory as well as comic relief. These locations consisted of Camp San Luis Obispo, CA; The Royal Air Force Base in Alconbury, England; Spangdahlem, Germany; Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier Parish, LA; Bagotville Air Force Base, Canada; and Anderson Air Force Base in Guam. Overall, Mike always placed the best for his military family and the tasks at hand above all his personal needs, wants, or desires. Mike's primary concern was to be there for all of those in his unit.

Mike was a jack of all trades, a master carpenter and mason, but mostly enjoyed puttering in the garage. He could build anything. Whether it was restoring cars, building houses, or numerous remodeling projects, Mike was there when called upon. Mike's personality allowed many people to gravitate to him. He was a charter member of the Blue Moon Cruisers and a life member of the Gratz VFW Post #2385 where he accumulated numerous friends. Mike's generosity, willingness to help those in need and love for his family and friends will be terribly missed.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy "Queeny" Kaufman, his father-in-law Roy Sheely and by a nephew Derek Sheely. In addition to his father, Mike is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Barbara A. (Sheely) Kaufman, his two daughters Kaitlyn Royann Kaufman and Michaela Marie "Mole" Kaufman; his sister Christina L. Valentine and her husband Darren all of Carlisle; his mother in law Cynthia Keeley and her husband Lynn; brothers in law Kenneth Sheely and wife Kristen; Timothy Sheely and wife Rhonda; nieces and nephews Victoria, Mason, Carson, Emma, Keyton and Skylar; as well as his best friend Chris Kennedy and last but not least Mike's canine companion Zolla.

A public visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 PM Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. A virtual live streamed service will be held Wednesday, May 12th beginning at 11:00 AM. To access the Zoom service please see the information below. Burial with military honors will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery when the restrictions are lifted, and everyone will be able to attend the ceremony in person.

As an expression of sympathy, the family would request in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions are made in memory of Mike to his go-fund-me page to help defray his medical expenses. Contributions may be made at www.gofundme.com/f/mikes-kaufmans-medical-expenses-memorial/donate
