2)Millie Hancock

3)Mrs. Ellen Burger Merritt
07 Oct 1864 Sonoma Co, CA
As an adult he traveled on a wagon train to Oregon with his family, parents, and siblings. Millie was his wife at this time. They had a daughter Louisa who was born just as they entered Oregon Territory. John remained in Oregon for a couple of years and then settled in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, CA. Around 1878, just 3 months before Virgil Earp, he moved to Prescott, Yavapai, AZ where he was a prosperous Stockraiser. I imagine he knew Virgil Earp and possibly Doc Holliday who is listed in Prescott in the 1880 Census. My grandma told me a story that was passed down in her family that she had cousins who lived in the Wild West and knew the Earps. Wyatt, Morgan, and Doc stopped in Prescott to convince Virgil to move with them to Tombstone. Johnny Behan, who became the Sheriff of Tombstone, is also listed on the 1880 Census in a mining camp just outside Prescott. Wyatt's future wife Josephine is enumerated with him. John moved to Whittier, Los Angeles, CA about 1888-1892. His son Charles was in the Walnut Farm Business. The cemetery John was buried in succumbed to much vandalism. Many of the headstones were stolen or broken. The city eventually removed all the headstones and replaced it with one large memorial stone.
