Bio suggested by FAG member Jan on 5/25/2023:

"One of the early settlers of Poultney, he d first enlisted in 1775 with Capt Whiting's company of Col. Brewer's Regiment, in nearby Tyringham, Massachusetts as a Lieutenant. Later, in Jan 1777, he represented the township at the Vermont Convention of their Declaration of Independence and in March 1777 served on the Committee of Safety and was named Captain of the local militia. During the summer of 1777, he fought at the Battle of Ticonderoga and then the following battles at Hubbardton, where he received the rank of Major, and then he and his company followed the women of Poultney who had fled South to avoid the British troops bearing down on the town from Hubbardton. Catching up with their 13 women and numerous children In Pownal, they fought at the Battle of Bennington. Leader of the women was Beulah Stearns Dewey, his second wife, who single-handedly intimidated the British soldiers who found them inside a tavern with an empty musket.
He continued to serve throughout the war and marched his company to the assistance of Gov. Clinton in May 1780. In 1781 he served on the Alarm to Castleton to assist the sheriff.

His military records describe him as, 'five feet ten inches in height, slim but muscular build, small, keen black eyes, dark hair, inclining to stoop at the shoulders; of a strong, sanguine temperment; a man of good mind, good judgment, and sound common sense.'"

Inscription

In memory of
Major Zebediah Dew
ey who died Oct 28th
1804 in the 78th year
of his age.
-----
O'er the sad tomb Columbia's genius
bends,
And weeps her hero in his dark abode.
Above an Angels holy trump extends,
And hails the Spirit to his parent God.
