BOWLES, DELONA 'LONEY' CHEEK
Biological parents unknown.
Raised by CHEEK family in
Jackson, Georgia. She married
Cicero Randolph 'C.R.' Bowles,Jr.
2 Nov 1887 in Walton, Georgia.
C. R. & Lona moved from Georgia to
Garden Valley, Texas in 1890 in
a covered wagon. They had
2 children, Virgil Anderson
age 2 and Jenny Mae was a
newborn. They bore 10 children -
Seven lived long and productive
lives. Twin sons were stillborn.
A son,Gurley died at abt age 6.
They are buried in Garden Valley
Cemetery with only rocks to
mark their graves.
Children Born in Texas:
Hubert 'Bud' Bowles, Rilla Idell
Bowles Lewis, Vassie Bowles Scott,
Curtis Bowles & Beatrice Bowles
Warren Stegall.

AND NOW - THE REST OF THE STORY------
The History is that Lonie was left on
the doorsteps of a family named Cheek
who had a large family and most of
them much older. They took the infant
in to raise. There has been much
speculation over the years as to whether
Lonie might be half-Indian. Then comes
along the GENEADDICT in the family who
is like a Pit Bull - when she gets her
teeth into something, she never lets go!
There was a large Family named Cheek on
the on the same page of 1860 US Census
as the Anderson Bowles Family whose
oldest son was Cicero Randolph, Sr who
would later become the faher of C.R., Jr
who married Lona Cgeek! I couldn't prove
anything 10 yrs ago because the info
I had was before C.R. & Lona were
born and it was harder to connect the
dots----UNTIL! A couple of year ago,
I found C.R. Bowles & DELONA Cheeks
marriage in Walton County GA. NOBODY
ever mentioned the name 'Delona',
only Lona or Lonie. Immediately an 1870
US Census popped up on Ancestry with
Russell Cheek 28 as head and Margaret,
32 as his wife. They have an 11 year old
male listed as 'son' which means Russell
was 17 when he was born. Then there is
a 1 y/o baby and a 4 y/o name 'Delona'
age 4. The 1880 US Census has Harrison
Cheek age 34 (4 years younger than
Russell, Margaret age 40 is still the
wife and mother (she has only gained 6
years since 1870. The son, Edward L.
age 19 still listed as son has only
gained 7 years since 1870 and now his
dad would have been 15 when he was born.
We know this happens on Census reports
all the time, but, remarkably, Delona
and the baby Martha gained their full
10 yrs (14 & 11).I'm sure this is my
gr-grandmoher.I have proof Russel's
father is Major Lewis Cheek, 1823.
He is one of the children living next
door to Anderson Bowles 1804-1873 on
the 1860 Census. Russell Harrison Cheek
and Margaret Carlisle married in 1860.
SO! Was Lona/Delona the daughter of one
of the older Cheeks and raised by Family,
or is she a waif left on their doorstep?
SAW

MOORE FAMILY HISTORY: There is a
discrepancy in Lonie's birth date on
her Tombstone and the 1900 US Census
Report which lists the month & year of
birth. Her birth was May 1865. Her
Monument has 14 Feb 1865.
When I found this,I called our Family
Historian, Pauline Bowles Jarman who was
102 y/o Nov 27 2011. She said that after
the birth of C.R. & Lona's youngest
daughter, Beatrice Bowles born
14 Feb 1909, Grand Pa Bowles wanted
Grandma Bowles to change HER birth date
to 14 Feb (probably so he could remember
better). And in those days, if you
wanted to change something - legal or
whatever - you just did it! SAW
