Joan spent her early years in Salt Lake and Ogden. After graduating from Ogden High School, Joan attended Brigham Young University. While there, she met and married Maury Allen Thomas on October 15, 1954. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
In 1958, Joan and Maury opened Quality Cleaners in Springville. She continued to run this business after Maury's death until her health began to fail, then she turned it over to her children.
Joan enjoyed traveling and was able to visit many interesting places throughout the world. She also loved to decorate, craft, and shop. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family. The grandchildren and grand dogs always loved to go to grandmas. She always had a good supply of Oreos, chocolate, and dog treats.
Joan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many positions through the years, including teacher, den mother, craft leader in Relief Society, and visiting teacher.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Maury, and grandson, Rustin Porter. She is survived by her children - Michelle (Robert) Porter, Lori (Steve) Chandler, Rich Thomas, and Julie (Rodger) Johnson, 9 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry (Susanne) Yearsley, and sister, Denise James.
