Brother R.J. "Dooley" Rodgers, age 91 of Weches, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007 in the Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. Brother Rodgers was born July 18, 1915 in Houston County and was a lifetime resident of Houston County. Brother Rodgers began working as a mechanic then worked at the Forest Service in 1949 and retired in 1978. Brother Rodgers began in the ministry in 1949 and pastored Weches Baptist Church and several other churches, he continued to preach until having to retire after his health failed. Brother Rodgers time was well spent as an avid fisherman, with his cattle and with his family, his greatest asset. Brother Rodgers was a member of the Weches Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Robbie Rodgers, of Weches; children Severn Rodgers and wife Neta Jane, Essie Kellum and husband Kennon, all of Weches, Geneva Moore, of Nashville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren Shelly Villanueva, of Crockett, Severn Rodgers, Jr,, Steve Rodgers, Shane Rodgers, Roger Kellum, Russell Kellum, all of Weches, Charla Kelley, of Manassas, Va., Tresha Johnson, of Cleveland, Missy Moore, of Orlando, Fla., Susan Stewart, of Norfolk, Va., Samuel Moore, of Nashville, Tenn.; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; half-brothers Brother Raleigh Burran, of Weches, Elvis Burran, of Levelland; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral Services for Brother R. J. "Dooley" Rodgers were held Tuesday, July 10, at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Cary Modisette the Rev. Ottis Byers and the Rev. Jonathan Kelley officiating. Interment followed in the Weches Cemetery.
