Ralph "Gene" Eugene Harman passed away at the age of 78 after a prolonged period of illness on Sunday, April 11th at his home. His body was worn out and his soul was weary.

Born in Rising Sun, Maryland, Gene was the son of Robert Ralph and Myrtle Elizabeth Slade Harman. Gene lived for a period of time in Washington DC until he met the love of his life, Lorell "Gaynelle" Horn Harman, and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage renewing their vows on their 53rd wedding anniversary. Later he moved to Southwest Virginia where he made his home in Cedar Bluff for the next 50 years. Gene was a man who worked hard throughout his life to provide for his family. Gene was a loving husband, caring father, and best known for being a wonderful D-Dad.

Gene was employed with United Coal Company and Tecco Coal Company. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Richlands. Gene enjoyed fishing, golf, teasing, was a connoisseur of good food (including steaks, hot dogs, hoagies and fair food), and going to the beach.

Gene is survived by his wife Gaynelle, he was a loving father to his two daughters, Kimberley Harman Harrison and husband, Rev Michael Harrison of Kentucky and Terrie Harman Coburn and husband, Dr. Ernie Coburn of North Carolina. D-Dad's grandchildren are Eric Dye and wife, Prany, Trista Bednarik and husband, Brandon, Jillian Harrison, Hannah Harrison, and Courtney Harrison. Great grandchildren are Asher Bednarik and Amelia Lowe. He felt very blessed to meet his great grandson Asher. Gene enjoyed taking his grandchildren to practices and watching them in their various activities. He was a big fan of the Richlands Blue Tornado Football Team, listening to the Friday night games for years via radio once he was unable to attend the games in person.

Gene was preceded in death by both parents, his brother Johnny Harman, brother, Billy Harman and sister, Carolyn Burton. He is survived by sisters Margaret Edmundson, Marie Alshire, and Garry Harman all of Maryland.

Special thanks to Legacy Hospice, Kathy Proffitt Hubbard, Pam Robbins, and Loretta Smith, for the care shown to Gene during his final days.

The family will receive family members from 11:30-12 and visitors at Singleton Funeral Home in Cedar Bluff on Wednesday, April 14th from 12-1 p.m.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Mike Harrison officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum with services at grave site. Pallbearers will be nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., FL. 17 Chicago, IL 60601 http://Alz.org

Gene will be missed, for his ability to be positive and having a sense of humor. He is now celebrating having a healthy body and trying to decide whether to play golf or go fishing up in heaven. Gene was an excellent example of how to be a gentleman. He showed his daughters and grand-daughters how they should be treated and his grandson how to treat a lady by his actions towards his loving wife throughout their years as husband and wife.

As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Commonwealth of Virginia Mandate, facial coverings and social distancing are required at all times. For those unable or uncomfortable attending, the funeral will be livestreamed on our Facebook page at Singleton Funeral Service.

Online condolences may be sent to the family by going to www.SingletonFuneralService.com.
