Grover Cleveland Capps was born 10 Jan 1892 in Bradford, Gibson County, Tennessee. (World War I Draft Card.) He Married Kathryn Melissa King 24 June 1912 in Cherokee County, Oklahoma (Oklahoma Marriage Records). They had four children (1913-1919) all born in Peggs, Cherokee County. The 1920 U.S. Census records show that the family was living in Peggs at the time the census enumeration (14 January 1920).
Four months after the census was taken in that area, on 2 May 1920 Peggs was devastated by a horrific tornado, which killed one-third of the people of the community (over 50 people) and injured many more than that. Grover Capps was killed or seriously injured and subsequently died in the tornado. Some family records indicate that he died on 2 June 1920. The tornado struck the evening of May 2nd, and this may be an error in family records. It is also possible that Grover Capps was seriously injured in the tornado and died later from his injuries. Coffins for the large number of dead had to be brought from surrounding counties, and many individuals were not even buried in coffins but in a large mass grave.
Elizabeth "Lizzy" (King) Littlefield, the sister of Kathryn Melissa (King) Capps also lived in Peggs. She, as well as several members of her family, were also killed in the tornado of 2 May 1920.
