Marcus Gillett Rich was the son of Rufus Rich 1805 and Saloma Gillett. His parents were married in Middlefield, Otsgeo, New York, and lived there until about 1837 when they moved to Albion, Oswego, New York along with much of the mother's family. The father of Rufus, Col Moses Rich, also made a similar move.

Marcus G probably moved with his brother Demetrius to the Waukegan Illinois area. He served in the Civil War with the 15th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. After the war he probably lived with or near on of his brothers in Sullivan County, Missouri, where he applied for a Civil War pension.

Marcus married Sarah E Thorpe, the daughter of Rev George II Thorpe and Sarah Hare, in Adair County, Missouri, on May 9, 1865.

The couple lived in Penn and Green Earth, Sullivan County, Missouri, near his brothers George and Demetrius.

The couple had 7 children:

Luella 1866, married Jacob M Custer, lived in Penn, Sullivan, Missouri, and Jackson, Greene, Missouri, one child.
