Rufus Rich was the son of Col. Moses Rich 1767 and Sarah Hickox. He was born, grew up and married in Middlefield, Otsego, New York to Saloma Gillett, the daughter of C Marcus Gillett and Lucinda Manchester.

In 1834 he purchased property in Albion, Oswego County, New York, in order to be closer to his family. His father Moses Rich had moved to Oswego county about 1822.

The couple lived in Albion and were buried in Riverside Cemetery at Altmar.

The couple had 11 children.

Children:

Clarissa, 1828, married William Kenyon, moved to Wisconsin, six children.

George Herman 1829, married Laura Matilda Greenfield, lived in Scriba and Albion, moved to Green Earth, Sullivan, Missouri by 1870, five children.

Rhoda L 1832, married Lewis K Bassett, moved to Hancock County, Illinois, two children.

Marcus G 1834, married Sarah E Thorpe, moved to Green Earth, Sullivan, Missouri, seven children.

Louise L 1836, married John Anderson, moved to La Crescent and Carlston, Minnesota, then to Hancock County, Illinois, four children.

Demetrius M "Dean" 1838, married Maggie E, Emily Sandry, and Minnie B Sharts, lived in Albion, Waukigan, Illinois, and Green Castle, Sullivan, Missouri. Two children.

Adelbert E 1841, fought and died in the Civil War, buried in Riverside Cemetery, Altmar, New York.

Harriet Eliza 1843, married Edwin Menzo Sperry, lived in Boonville, Oneida, New York, five children.

Mary E 1846 - 1848, buried in Riverside Cemetery.

Marietta 1849, married N H Chamberlain, one child. Died in 1870, buried in Riverside Cemetery.

Emma Jane "Jennie" 1851, married Leonard Ames Whitney, lived in Mexico, Oswego, New York. Two children.
