Served in the Union Army, 20th Indiana Infantry, Company "G". Husband of Sarah Jane (Steele) Thayer. Married: April 26 1863.

Parents: Wales and Catherine (Walker) Thayer.

He enlisted in the Union Army on 3d day of July 1861. He fought in the battles of Fair Oaks, the Wilderness, White Oak Swamps, Gaines Hill, Malvern Hill, Fairfax Court House, and eleven others. After the second battle at Bull Run he was seized with pneumonia from which he had suffered on a previous occasion. He was sent to the hospital at Fortress Monroe was removed from there to convalescent camp thence to Philadelphia hospital thence back to camp where he received his discharge because of ill health.

Nicholas Thayer, farmer, was born in New Haven, Huron County, Ohio, July 21, 1835, a son of Wales Thayer (1804-1845) and Catharine (Walker) Thayer (1807*-1872). He left Ohio when 16 years of age and spent about nine years in traveling and visiting some 27 different states. He then enlisted in the service of his country, in Co. "G" of the 20th Indiana Volunteers, on the 8th day of July, 1861. He accompanied General McClellan on through all his campaigns and afterward served under General Pope, taking part in the battles of Fair Oaks, the Wilderness, White Oak Swamps, Gaines Hill, Malvern Hill, Fairfax Court House and 11 others. After 2nd Battle of Bull Run, he was seized with pneumonia, from which, indeed, he suffered on a previous occasion. He was sent to the hospital at Fort Monroe, was removed from there to convalescent camp, thence to Philadelphia hospital, thence back to camp, where he received his discharge because of ill health on Feb. 16, 1863. He was married to Miss Sarah Jane Steele, of New Haven, April 26, 1863, at her mother's home. They settled in Merritt Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, in June 1863, among that community's earliest pioneers. Nicholas farmed in that area for many years and served as Justice of the Peace in Merritt Township in 1910. He died Dec. 20, 1914, aged 79 years, 4 months, 28 days, in Bay City, Bay County, Michigan, of lobar pneumonia. Burial followed in Elm Lawn Cemetery, Bay City on Dec. 23, 1914.
