He was born March 1, 1818, in Washington county, Pennsylvania, and at the age of about 16 moved to Knox county, Ohio, where he was married to Hannah Scott in 1840. six children were born to them, four boys and two girls all have died except Thomas. His wife died January 1894, and since then he's been living with is son Thomas.
