A sad case of drowning occurred in Shoal creek, at what is known as Cedar Bluff, a half mile southwest of the pest (sic) house, about 10:30 o'clock this forenoon. The unfortunate victim was Harrold, the 11-year-old son of L. C. Rountree, who lives in East Galena.

The circumstances surrounding the unfortunate affair are as follows: Harrold and four other companions, of about the same age, but whose names could not be learned, were in bathing. The four companions left the water, put on their clothes to go to go to a spring some little distance away for a drink. They left Harrold in the water. That was the last time they saw him until the dead body was recovered about 2 o'clock this afternoon.

When the boys came back Harrold was no place to be seen, but his clothes lay piled upon the bank of the creek. They made a search but could not find him and they then came to town and notified his parents and the officers. In a few minutes a large crowd drove out to the creek. City Marshal George Elliott, Constable John Hardwick, Rube Crabtree, George Pulley, Buck Nelson and Dave Lewis jumped into the water, which was from 8 to 12 feet, deep and about 60 fifty wide. After diving around for some time, one of the boys told Elliott that the last time he saw Harrold he was in a certain place. Elliott dived down there and found the body and swam to shore with it. The little fellow's head rested on a large rock in water nine feet deep. The body was brought to the home of the parents and Undertaker Stough was sent for to prepare it for burial. The funeral will probably occur sometime tomorrow.

The bereaved parents, brothers and sister of the unfortunate boy have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of their little son and companion.
