THE AMES MILEPOST, January 7, 1937. "JOHN BACKOUS. – John Backous, 73, pioneer of the Cambridge neighborhood, died at Iowa sanitarium, Nevada, early Friday as a result of an attack of pneumonia from which he was suffering when taken there Thursday noon. Mr. Backous who for many years lived on a farm east of Cambridge, had been living in Cambridge for the past three years. He leaves his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Harker Irving in Cambridge, besides many other relatives."

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 7, 1937, page _, column 1. "Local News - Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Ince and the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Hilton were in attendance at the funeral, Sunday, of the late John Backous, a Cambridge pioneer, who died at Iowa Sanitarium on New Year's day, a victim of pneumonia."
