George and Elizabeth Oxley Backous had the following children: Anna, Emma, George, William Henry, John, Walter, Charlotte Mary, Levenia, Arthur and unknown daughter.

MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 24, 1904, page 1: "OBITUARY - George Backous was born February 7, 1835 in Cliff, Yorkshire, England and died at his home in Story county, Iowa, March 17, 1904, being sixty-nine years, one month and ten days old. He grew to manhood at his old home, and was united in marriage to Elizabeth Oxley on December 3, 1857. To this union ten children five sons and five daughters were born, of which five sons and three daughters together with Mrs. Backous still survive him, one son and one daughter being yet in England. Mr. Backous came to America in 1885 and resided in this neighborhood until his death. He was always held in the highest respect by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends. He was a man of upright character in every way and was always ready to do his part in carrying forward the work of progress. The funeral was conducted at the M. P. church in Peoria Saturday, March 19th, by Rev. A. Q. Gharrett and interment was made in the Peoria cemetery. The pall bearers were N. H. Pearson, J. B. Angelo, Frank Kimberly, James Bowers, William Pritchard and William Vasey. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their time of great trial."
