'98 War Veteran

James A. Baker; 79, Spanish American War veteran, died Saturday morning in the veterans hospital in Louisville. He had been transferred to the hospital five days earlier from Washington county hospital, where he had been a patient for a week for cancer treatment. He died suddenly while sitting in a wheel chair.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Stampers Creek Baptist church in charge of Rev. Powell Forbs, assisted by Rev.Andrew Limeberry of Marengo. Burial was by Ellis funeral directors in Stampers Creek cemetery. Military rites were in charge of the Paoli post American Legion.
Mr. Baker was a native of Orange county, born near chambersburg Sept 5 , 1878 the son of Vader and Jenny Lynn Wells Baker. He was the eldest of 10 children. Most of his life has been spent in this community where he lived as a farmer and operator of a threshing machine.

He was first married to Elva Alspaugh and to them were born nine children, Louis and Glenn of Paoli, Earl of Milltown, Jesse of Mitchell, Alva of Anderson, Mrs Thomas Hart of Jeffersonville, Mrs Kalman Toth of Deerfield, Ohio, and Mrs Robert Jackson and Mrs Amos Brough of Orleans. Following his wife's death in 1924 he was married on Oct. 5, 1925 to Carrie Speer, who survives with their three children, Mrs Orville Kellams of Paoli, Mrs Carl Agan of Hammond, and Clifford of Orleans. Also surviving is one brother Sam Baker of Walkerton, 30 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Mr Baker was a member of the Milltown Church of Christ.
