Lorene Martha Hulda Dietrich Avant, 92, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kevin Haug offficiating. Visitation was held beforehand.
Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.
Mrs. Avant was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Gillespie County, the daughter of Arthur Dietrich and Esther Durst Dietrich. She married Albert (Jack) Avant on May 9, 1948, at Bethany Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on March 24, 2014.
A 1943 Fredericksburg High School graduate, Mrs. Avant entered the Cadet Nurses Corp on July 1, 1944, at the P&S Hospital, San Antonio, and graduated in 1947 as a registered nurse.
Her career took her through private duty, office nurse, hospital nurse, school nurse, in-service trainer nurse and home health nurse.
After many years of service, she retired from the Baptist Memorial Hospital system and then took another position at the Visiting Nurses Association, retiring in 1991. Mrs. Avant is survived by two sons, two daughters and spouses, including Anthony (Wayne) and Donna Avant of Ovilla, Charles Avant of San Antonio, Virginia (Ginny) Rauth of League City, and Joanne and David (Dave) Denney of Driftwood.
Survivors also include six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Avant was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Avant; three brothers, Raymond Dietrich, Louis Dietrich and Arthur (Whitey) Dietrich Jr. and three sisters, Dora, Mrs. Martin Feuge; Leola, Mrs. Walter Fuhrmann, and Vernell, Mrs. Guenther Maenius.
